Stainless steel (S.S.) forging is a manufacturing process that shapes stainless steel into specific forms by applying heat and pressure, resulting in enhanced mechanical properties and superior durability. This process involves heating stainless steel to a pliable temperature, typically between 1700 to 2300 degrees Fahrenheit, and then shaping it through hammering, pressing, or rolling to create components with increased strength, hardness, and resistance to fatigue and corrosion.
Material selection: The appropriate grade of stainless steel is chosen based on the desired characteristics like corrosion resistance, strength, and heat resistance.
Heating: The stainless steel billet or ingot is heated to a pliable temperature, typically between 2100°F and 2300°F (1150°C and 1250°C), although this can vary by grade.
Shaping: Compressive forces are applied to deform and shape the heated billet into the desired form. This can involve hammering, pressing, or rolling, depending on the specific forging method used, such as:
Open Die Forging: Used for large, custom shapes, where the dies don't fully enclose the metal.
Closed Die Forging (Impression Die): Used for precision shapes and tight tolerances, where the metal fills a die cavity.
Rolled Ring Forging: Creates seamless rings with exceptional strength, often used in bearings and flanges.
Upset Forging: Increases the cross-sectional area of a workpiece, used for fasteners and parts with robust ends.
